Wirtham developing his armor himself made sense given that he's one of the Marvel Universe's most intelligent individuals. The only time the two knowing each other has been referenced in modern stories was in Civil War, where Cardiac could have joined Iron Man's Initiative. This was especially the case concerning Cardiac's arsenal, which never seemed to have any ties to Tony. Previous comics had established that Tony Stark and Cardiac's alter ego Elias Wirtham were associates, but their relationship was never shown as being particularly strong. This is despite the fact that Stark apparently had a hand in developing Cardiac's armor and weaponry. While he contemplated his next steps he also noted that Tony Stark would probably not loan him his Iron Man armor. Unable to do much, he considers teaming up with Silver Sable, who had recently been seen working with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Though he survived the encounter, Cardiac was a lot more banged up than he had initially thought. In the end, they both manage to scurry away from the fight, with Doctor Doom being disappointed in Vulture's handiwork.

Cardiac is seen fighting the Spider-Man villain, Vulture, at the beginning of the issue.
